Electric scooters are remarkably low-maintenance compared to cars or gas-powered vehicles, but that does not mean zero maintenance. A few simple habits can extend the life of your scooter by years and keep it performing at its best. Here are the essential maintenance tips every scooter owner should follow.
Battery Care: Your Most Important Task
The lithium battery is the heart of your electric scooter and also the most expensive component to replace. To maximize its lifespan, never leave it fully discharged for extended periods. If you store your scooter for the winter, charge the battery to about 60 percent and recharge it every two months. Avoid charging in extreme heat or cold. Ideally, charge at room temperature. Using the original charger that came with your scooter is essential: third-party chargers with incorrect voltage can damage the battery cells.
Tire Maintenance
If your scooter has pneumatic (air-filled) tires, check the pressure weekly. Under-inflated tires reduce range by up to 15 percent and increase the risk of pinch flats. The recommended PSI is printed on the tire sidewall. For solid honeycomb tires like those on the Altfishbike 350W, simply inspect for cracks or embedded debris monthly. Solid tires never go flat, but they can wear unevenly if you frequently ride over rough surfaces.
Monthly maintenance checklist:
- Check tire pressure (pneumatic) or inspect for wear (solid)
- Test both front and rear brakes for responsiveness
- Tighten all visible bolts, especially the stem folding mechanism
- Clean the deck and stem with a damp cloth
- Inspect the charging port for debris or moisture
- Verify lights and reflectors are working
Brake Inspection
Brakes are your most critical safety component. Disc brakes should be checked monthly for pad wear. If you hear a grinding or squealing sound when braking, the pads likely need replacement. Most disc brake pads are inexpensive and can be swapped with basic tools. Electronic brakes require no physical maintenance but should be tested regularly to ensure the motor cuts power when engaged.
A well-maintained electric scooter can easily last 3 to 5 years of daily commuting. The key is consistency: small monthly checks prevent costly repairs later.
Storage and Weather Protection
Most electric scooters have an IP54 water resistance rating, meaning they can handle light rain and splashes. However, they are not waterproof. Never submerge your scooter or ride through standing water deeper than the deck height. After riding in rain, dry the scooter thoroughly before charging. Store your scooter indoors whenever possible. Prolonged exposure to UV sunlight can degrade the plastic components and fade the finish over time.
